More men are now considering tummy tuck procedures, also known as abdominoplasties, than ever before. While men still make up for only a fraction of the total number of procedures performed, the number of men who got an abdominoplasty in 2016 was 114% higher than in 2015.
There are several things that may cause abdominal muscles and skin to become stretched out or slack. An abdominoplasty can resolve this problem, providing a smoother, tighter abdomen and a slimmer-looking physique. The procedure can tighten loose abdominal muscles and remove excess skin from the area to reduce the appearance of a protruding or sagging belly.
Particularly after weight loss, even if you lose a significant amount of body fat and have a low BMI, it can be hard to get rid of the extra skin and get the definition in the abdominal region that many men want.
Abdominoplasties vary in the amount of skin they remove. A “mini” tummy tuck simply removes some excess skin from the abdominal area without touching the underlying tissue. A standard tummy tuck will remove excess skin, but also some fat from the area to ensure a flat contour, and will sometimes tighten up the underlying muscles. A more extensive version of the procedure does all the above, but also addresses the flanks and even love handles. Depending on how much skin and fat is removed, the navel may have to be repositioned to achieve a more aesthetically pleasing look.
For men who have undergone extensive weight loss and have significant sagging in the mid-region of the body, an abdominoplasty is sometimes combined with a body lift, which features more extensive reshaping of the lower back, buttocks, and thighs to remove sagging skin and “lift” the appearance of the whole region. Abdominoplasty is best performed on men who are within a healthy weight range and have good skin elasticity.
For men who’ve gotten out of shape a bit, and are now more conscious of their health and back to exercising more, an abdominoplasty is a great way to hit the “reset” button. What we’ve heard from patients is that they not only look younger but feel younger and more invigorated too.
